Keflavík Airport to the Blue Lagoon

How Far Is the Blue Lagoon From Keflavík Airport? 23 km, About 20 Minutes

The Blue Lagoon is about 23 km from Keflavík Airport (KEF), roughly a 20-minute drive. Reykjavík is much further out at about 50 km and 45 to 50 minutes. The lagoon sits between the two, which is why almost everyone does it on the day they land or the day they fly home rather than making a separate trip out of the city.

The short answer: 23 km, about 20 minutes

From the terminal doors at Keflavík to the Blue Lagoon car park is about 23 km and roughly 20 minutes of driving. There is no traffic to speak of on this stretch. It is open lava field almost the whole way. In hard winter weather, drifting snow or low visibility, add ten minutes and drive slower rather than trying to hold the same average.

That distance is the whole reason the lagoon works as an arrival-day or departure-day stop. It is closer to the airport than it is to the city, and it is on the way. You do not have to give up a day in Reykjavík to see it.

The route: Route 41, then Route 43 to Grindavík

Two turns, and both are signposted.

All paved, no gravel, no F-roads, nothing that needs a 4x4. The last convenient fuel is in Njarðvík just off Route 41, worth two minutes if you are returning the car straight afterwards. Turn-by-turn detail and parking notes are in our Blue Lagoon from KEF guide.

Rental car, transfer bus or taxi: what each costs

Prices move with season and demand. These are ranges to plan around, not quotes.

If your flight lands after midnight, check which desks are actually staffed before you count on a car. See late-night car pickup.

Luggage storage is on site

Luggage storage is available at the lagoon for a small charge per bag, and it takes full-size suitcases. Hand the bags over at the entrance, go in, collect them on the way out. This is what makes the arrival-day plan work when you are carrying three weeks of gear.

With a rental car you can leave bags locked in the boot instead. Break-ins are rare here, but rental insurance will not cover contents, so passports, laptops and cash go with you into the storage room.

Arrival day or departure day: pick one

Arrival day. Book your slot two to three hours after landing. That absorbs passport control, baggage and the rental desk queue, and still gets you into the water before the flight catches up with you. Long-haul flights from North America land early and the first slot of the day shifts with the season, so take the earliest one offered and work forward from there.

Departure day. Work backwards instead. Leave the lagoon three hours before your flight: 20 minutes to drive, 30-40 for fuel and the rental return shuttle, then check-in and security. Coming from the city it is 45-50 minutes each way on the same road covered in airport to Reykjavík.

Slots are mandatory: book before you fly

Time slots are mandatory and walk-ins are not accepted. Turning up at the door without a booking means being turned away, whatever the car park looks like. Summer, Christmas and New Year sell out weeks ahead; in shoulder season a few days is usually enough.

Arrive inside your booked window rather than an hour early, because entry is managed slot by slot. And check what you actually booked: Sky Lagoon is a different place, in Reykjavík itself, about 45 minutes from KEF. People book one and drive to the other more often than you would think.

Volcanic activity can close the road

The Reykjanes peninsula is volcanically active. Eruptions and the lava flows that follow have closed Route 43, Grindavík and the lagoon itself at short notice, sometimes for days. Access is never guaranteed, however far in advance you booked.

Check safetravel.is and road.is on the morning you travel. If the road is closed, it is closed. Do not drive past a barrier, and take the authorities over social media. Book a refundable slot where you can and keep a plan B.

If the peninsula is shut, the day is not lost. Point the car east and start the 7-day Ring Road itinerary a day early.

Common questions

How far is the Blue Lagoon from Keflavík Airport?

About 23 km, a 20-minute drive. You take Route 41 east for roughly 10 km, then turn south onto Route 43 toward Grindavík and follow the signs. All paved, no 4x4 needed.

How far is the Blue Lagoon from Reykjavík?

About 50 km, a 45 to 50-minute drive. That is more than double the distance from the airport, which is why the lagoon is usually done on arrival or departure day rather than as a day trip from the city.

Which airport is closest to the Blue Lagoon?

Keflavík (KEF), at 23 km. It is also Iceland's only international airport. Reykjavík city airport (RKV) handles domestic flights plus Greenland and the Faroes, and sits about 50 km from the lagoon.

Is there a bus from Keflavík Airport to the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, scheduled transfer coaches run between the terminal and the lagoon for roughly EUR 25-40 per person each way. Departures are timed to flight banks and lagoon slots, and both timetables and operators change with the season, so confirm when you book.

How much is a taxi from Keflavík Airport to the Blue Lagoon?

Roughly EUR 90-150 one way for the whole car, not per person. That makes it expensive for one or two people and reasonable for four with luggage, compared with per-head coach fares.

Can I visit the Blue Lagoon with my luggage?

Yes, luggage storage is available on site for a small per-bag fee and takes full-size suitcases. That is what makes the 20-minute hop straight from the airport practical on arrival or departure day.

Do I need to book the Blue Lagoon in advance?

Yes, pre-booked time slots are mandatory and walk-ins are not accepted. Summer and the Christmas period sell out weeks ahead. Note that Reykjanes volcanic activity can close the area at short notice, so a refundable booking is worth it.
